When the phrase, “eco-friendly” comes to mind, intimidating words such as “vegan,” “composting,” and “electric car” often follow. “Eco-friendly” can easily come off as terrifying and confusing, especially if you don’t have access to the resources that seem necessary in order to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle. Below, we’ve compiled a list of three easy changes you can make while shopping to ensure that you are still making a positive impact on the environment, even when you don’t have the resources to transform your current way of living!
2. Shop locally. Items sold at farmers markets and local boutiques are less likely to be shipped around the world, meaning their environmental impact is minuscule compared to products sold at chain grocery stores. In addition, most fruits and vegetables sold at farmers markets are organic or pesticide free!
3. Pay attention to plastic waste. Plastic bags are an obvious example of unnecessary waste, and unfortunately, it’s not the only example. When purchasing foods, paying attention to the amount of plastic put into packaging can be helpful when working to reduce your carbon footprint. Next time you shop, aim for more fruits and vegetables—not only do they require less packaging, but they also do not require dairy or meat products that are sourced from factory farms. And if you’re craving a piece of chocolate while in line at the grocery store, that’s fine too! Just be sure to look for treats that are not individually packaged (an example of individually packaged candies include the Hi-Chews displayed in the image below).
